Quick answer

To use this online metronome, set the tempo with the slider or by tapping the Tap tempo button along with a song, choose the beats per bar (4 for 4/4, 3 for 3/4) and press Start. Beat 1 is accented so you always know where the bar begins; add subdivisions to keep fast passages even.

How to practise with a metronome

  1. Start 10–20% below the target tempo and play the hard bars cleanly three times in a row.
  2. Raise the tempo by 2–5 BPM and repeat. Stop when it gets sloppy.
  3. Turn on subdivisions for fast runs, then turn them off and check it still feels even.
  4. Use tap tempo to find the BPM of a recording before you practise with it.

Questions

Is this online metronome free?

Yes. It is free, runs in your browser and needs no sign-up or download.

Is a browser metronome accurate?

Yes, when it schedules clicks on the audio clock as this one does: every click is booked ahead of time on the Web Audio clock, so it does not drift even if the page is busy.

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Press Tap tempo in time with the beat at least 8 times; the metronome averages your taps and sets the BPM.

Can it play 3/4, 6/8 or odd time signatures?

Set the beats per bar from 1 to 12: 3 for 3/4, 6 for 6/8 (or 2 with triplets), 5 or 7 for odd meters. For songs that change time signature, use a song-map metronome such as Metronome Map 2.

What is a good BPM to practise at?

Start at a tempo where you can play the passage cleanly three times in a row — often 10–20% below the recording — and raise it 2–5 BPM at a time.
