Privacy Policy
Daylight (the App) is a free iPhone app made by PM Technology that helps people in Australia stop playing pokies. We built it so that the personal things you tell it stay on your phone. This policy explains what the App keeps on your phone, the optional community sharing you can turn on (and what it sends to our server when you do), and the choices you have.
In short
- Your profile, slip log, notes and everything else you enter stay on your phone. We never receive them.
- Your location is used only on your phone and never leaves it.
- No account, no ads, no in-app purchases, no analytics or tracking SDKs. We never sell data.
- Community sharing is off unless you turn it on. The App asks once at the end of setup, and you can change it any time in People. When it's on, the App sends a few small, anonymous community events (no names, no free text, no precise location), tied to a random install ID. They are deleted after 120 days.
- Our community server keeps no request logs, and we don't store IP addresses.
- Pot › Start over wipes the App's data from your phone and gives you a new install ID.
- Daylight is for adults 18+. It is not medical advice or a treatment service.
1 Information Stored Only on Your Phone
Everything you enter is saved in the App's own storage on your iPhone (local storage inside the App). It is never uploaded to us or to anyone else. This includes:
- Your profile: the weekly amount you used to lose, sessions, hours, your start date, goals, your buddy's first name, what you played for, your risk window, payday, your home and work places (as map coordinates or a postcode) and your own list of venues.
- Your activity: your slip log, including any notes you type, tips, joy plans, wellbeing check answers, lesson progress and Payday Shield ticks.
- Bank details: anything you type into the split-pay helper is used on screen only and is never stored.
Because this information never reaches us, we can't see it, recover it or delete it for you — you control it on your phone (see section 10). Depending on your iPhone settings, your phone's own backups (for example iCloud Backup) may include app data; those backups are held under your Apple account, not by us.
2 Location
- On your phone only: Daylight uses your location to show pokies-free places and, if you choose, to watch for venues. This happens on your phone. Your location is never sent to us or to anyone else — Daylight has no server that receives it.
- Watch for me: if you turn on Watch for me and allow “Always” location, the App uses iOS region monitoring to notice when you are within about 150 m of a venue with gaming machines, and shows a local notification. iOS needs “Always” permission for this to work while the App is closed.
- Your choice: turn it off at any time in the App (Radar › Watch for me) or in iOS Settings › Daylight › Location.
- Places you save: your home and work places stay on your phone (section 1). The only location-related detail that can ever leave your phone is your state — VIC, NSW or Other — worked out from your home postcode, and only if you turn on community sharing (section 4).
- Venue data: venue locations come from public data: © State of New South Wales (Liquor & Gaming NSW) and © State of Victoria (Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission; Liquor Control Victoria), both licensed under CC BY 4.0.
3 Notifications
Daylight's notifications, such as a venue alert from Watch for me, are local notifications created on your phone. We don't use a push notification service and don't send notifications from a server. You can turn them off at any time in iOS Settings › Daylight › Notifications.
4 Community Sharing (Optional)
Daylight has a community area that shows you're not the only one going through this. It runs on Daylight's community server, which PM Technology operates on Cloudflare Workers with a Cloudflare D1 database.
- Off unless you turn it on: community sharing is optional and off by default. Daylight asks you once at the end of setup, and you can turn it on or off at any time in People.
- When sharing is off: the App sends nothing about you to the community server. It only downloads the public community totals and shared wins so you can see them, using plain read requests (GET) that carry no install ID or any other identifier.
When sharing is on, the App sends:
- A random install ID created on your phone. It is not linked to your name, email address, Apple ID or advertising identifier.
- When you surf a wave (ride out an urge): that it happened, with your own estimated average session amount in whole dollars (capped at $2,000).
- A “kept day” event.
- An “in a wave now” status, which expires after 15 minutes.
- Encouragements you send: the number of a preset message, delivered to another anonymous person. Each one is deleted from the server about 30 minutes after it is sent (sooner if it has already been delivered).
- Wins you share: a preset win tag, with your number of days rounded down into a band (7, 14, 30, 60, 90, 180 or 365+). Shared wins — the tag, the days band and your state — are visible to other Daylight users, without your install ID.
- Cheers you give to other people's wins.
- Your state — VIC, NSW or Other — worked out from your home postcode.
- Never sent: your name, email, phone number or contacts, any free text (the server only accepts preset values), your notes, your profile, your postcode or your precise location.
- Why: to show everyone combined community totals and shared wins, to deliver encouragements and cheers, and to keep the service working and free from abuse. Community totals shown to everyone are aggregates. We use this data only to run the community feature — not for advertising, tracking or profiling.
- Where: requests are handled on Cloudflare's global network, and the database's primary location is in Oceania. Cloudflare processes this data for us as our service provider (section 7).
- No request logs: request logging (Cloudflare Workers logs) is turned off for the community server, so it doesn't keep a log of the requests your phone makes.
- IP addresses: like any internet service, Cloudflare sees your phone's IP address in order to deliver each request. We don't store IP addresses. To limit abuse, the server makes a salted hash of your IP address that changes every day and uses it in memory only, for rate limiting; it is not saved.
- How long: community rows are deleted automatically after 120 days. Some go much sooner: an “in a wave now” status lasts 15 minutes, encouragements are deleted about 30 minutes after they're sent, and a daily count of how many encouragements an install ID has sent (used only to limit abuse) is kept for about two days.
- Turning it off: turning sharing off in People stops the App sending anything new straight away. What was already sent stays tied only to the random install ID and is deleted on the schedule above; to cut the link straight away, use Pot › Start over (section 10).
- No identity: we don't hold your name, email or any account, so we can't find your community rows by name or email. You can still send us any request (section 10).
5 What We Don't Do
- No ads and no advertising SDKs (no AdMob), and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics or tracking SDKs, and no tracking across other companies' apps or websites.
- No Google Fonts or other third-party font services in the App: its fonts are built in.
- No request logs on our community server, and we don't store IP addresses (section 4).
- No accounts: we never ask for your name, email, phone number or Apple ID.
- No in-app purchases and no purchase services (no RevenueCat).
- We never sell or rent data, or share it for advertising.
- We never receive your location, your profile, your notes or anything you type into the split-pay helper.
6 Adults Only (18+)
Daylight is for adults aged 18 and over — in Australia, gambling is for people 18 and over — and the App is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has used the App, its data can be removed from the phone with Pot › Start over or by deleting the App, and you can contact us.
7 Sharing and Service Providers
We use one service provider for the App: Cloudflare, which hosts the community server and database and processes community events on our behalf as our processor, under its data processing terms (Cloudflare privacy policy). Cloudflare is a US company with a global network, so community events may be processed outside Australia; the database's primary location is in Oceania. We don't share App data with anyone else unless the law requires it. Apple distributes the App through the App Store under its own privacy policy.
8 Security
What you enter is kept in the App's private storage on your phone, protected by iOS app sandboxing and your device passcode — so please keep a passcode or Face ID / Touch ID turned on. Anyone who can unlock your phone and open the App can see what you've entered. Community events travel over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and the community server accepts only fixed event types and preset values. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what leaves your phone to the minimum described above.
9 Your Rights and Legal Bases
Your rights depend on where you live. Because we hold so little — and nothing that names you — most choices are made on your phone (section 10), but you can always contact us.
- Australia: we handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). The install ID is a random number made on your phone. Because we hold nothing that links it to your name or contact details, we don't think it reasonably identifies you on its own — but we still follow the APPs in how we handle it and everything sent with it. You can ask to access or correct personal information we hold about you, or complain about how we handled it. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
- EEA and UK (GDPR / UK GDPR): you may have the right to access, correct or delete your data, to restrict or object to its use, and to data portability. We rely on your consent for community sharing. Because it can reveal that you are working on your gambling — which may be sensitive or health-related information — nothing is sent unless you turn sharing on. You can withdraw your consent at any time by turning sharing off in People; this doesn't affect what was sent before. When sharing is off, the App only makes anonymous reads of the public totals and wins. We don't process the information in sections 1 and 2 at all — it stays on your phone. You can complain to your local data protection authority; in the UK, that is the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
- Thailand (PDPA): under the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019) you have similar rights. We rely on your consent for community sharing (as above), and you can withdraw it at any time in People. You can complain to the Office of the Personal Data Protection Committee (pdpc.or.th).
- United States: depending on your state (for example California), you may have rights to know, correct and delete personal information, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use it for targeted advertising.
Because community rows are tied only to a random install ID, we can't look them up by your name or email. Pot › Start over is the most reliable way to cut the link (section 10).
10 Deleting Your Data
- On your phone: go to Pot › Start over. This clears everything Daylight has stored on your phone and creates a new install ID. Deleting the App also removes its data from your phone.
- On the community server: turning sharing off in People stops anything new being sent. After Start over (or after deleting the App), your old community rows can no longer be linked to you, and they are deleted automatically within 120 days.
- Phone backups: if your iPhone backups include app data, you can manage or delete those backups in your Apple account settings.
- By email: you can send any privacy request to info@pm-tech.com.au. Because we hold no identity, we can't find community rows by name or email, but we'll explain what we can do and help where we can.
11 Links and Other Apps
Daylight can open pages on pm-tech.com.au, Apple Maps, official helpline, government and bank websites, and your phone's Phone and Messages apps (for calls and texts). Daylight itself sends nothing to them; once they open, their own privacy policies apply. Our website pm-tech.com.au is separate from the App and uses Google Analytics to measure visits.
12 Not Medical Advice
Daylight is not medical advice and not a treatment service. If you're not safe right now, call 000, Lifeline on 13 11 14 (or text 0477 13 11 14) or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467. For gambling support, call Gambling Help on 1800 858 858 (Gambler's Help in Victoria); for money worries, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.
13 Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy when the App or the services it uses change. We'll post the new version on this page and update the effective date above. For important changes, we'll also let you know in the App or in its App Store listing.
